The Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT Dharwad) was established in 2016 as part of the Government of India???s plan to expand IITs across the country. It is the first IIT in North Karnataka, located in Dharwad???a city known for its educational institutions and cultural heritage.

Under IIT Bombay's first direction, IIT Dharwad started off as a temporary campus at the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI), Dharwad. It has now shifted to its permanent 470-acre eco-friendly campus at Belur Industrial Area, equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories, research centers, and sustainable facilities.
